March 7, 2008 - This race has been called the “Great American Race”. Beginning in 1959 on February 22, Daytona International Speedway hosted the very first Daytona 500. There were 59 cars entered into the race, and thus began a NASCAR tradition that has been one of the most popular races ever since.

The race was 200 laps in front of a crowd of over 40,000 people. The end of the race was posted as “unofficial” because the two leaders were so close together at the finish line to come to a conclusive decision, but Johnny Beauchamp went on to Victory Lane and celebrated the race.

A day and a half later, Lee Petty was decided to be the winner after newsreel footage showed Petty winning by a few feet.

Fifty years has gone by since that first race, and the Daytona 500 still proves to be the number one race in NASCAR, bringing in the most money and most fans. The winner of this race makes a hefty sum, totaling somewhere in the neighborhood of more than $1.5 million, compared to what Petty made in 1959 at $19,050. Not only is the amount of money won during this race incredible, but winners also have the honor of having the Harley J. Earl trophy on their shelf at home.
