In 1963, race car driver Tiny Lund showed an incredible amount of courage when he pulled Marvin Panch from his burning sports car. A number of other players have won after narrowly missing accidents, including Benny Parsons in 1975.

Another incredible moment in Daytona 500 history was with David Pearson and Richard Petty in 1976. Both were leading in the last stretch of the race when Petty tried to pass Pearson after the last turn. Petty’s car didn’t clear Pearson’s, and the two spun out just short of the finish line. Petty couldn’t get his car to start, but Pearson did, and he got the damaged car slowly over the finish line to win. This is considered to be one of the greatest finishes in NASCAR’s entire history.
